Specializing in a genre

There are several categories in freediving and they are called disiplines. And there are two main categories.

Pool Disiplines

Static Apnea - This is basically a test in a swimming pool to see how long you can hold your breath.
Dynamic Apnea With Fins - In this dicipline they swim a ceratin distance underwater amost like a sprint and they can choose between bi-fin or monofin.
Dynampic Apnea Without Fins - As you might guess this is the same as above but they dont have any fins.

Depth Disiplines

Constant Weight Apnea With / Without Fins - This is two seperate disiplines, but they are the same only in one you get to wear fins and the other you dont. You follow a visual referance without toutching it and follow it to a ceratin depth. You are not allowed to drop any weights during this disipline.
Free Immersion Apnea - The same as above in may ways, but in this you use the referance line witch is most commonly a rope to pull your self down.
No - Limits Apnea - This is kind of like a maraton where everyone is free to use steroids. You can go bouth up and down by any means nessesary. So what most people do is to go down with a weighted sled and then go up with a air filled baloon.
Variable Weight Apnea - This dicipline is a bit more toned down, but you can go down with a weighted sled and return by pulling your self up by the rope.
